Chicken Wire Glass Breathes New Life into Historic NYC Landmark

Tucked into Jamaica Bay, on the southeast side of Brooklyn, lies New York City’s original municipal airport, Floyd Bennett Field – built in 1931. Recently, two historic hangars at the airfield were painstakingly restored by a new tenant. Thanks to their complete restoration, featuring С��ñֱ��’s VintageWire chicken wire glass, they now sparkle with just as much “golden age of aviation” glamour as they did in their heyday.

The main objective for С��ñֱ�� at Floyd Bennett Field was matching the antique chicken-wire glass panes found on the facade. Our design experts were able to develop a safety-laminated, patterned glass containing true chicken wire for the project. The custom glass meets the aesthetic requirements of the historic restoration, as well as modern building safety codes.

Chicken wire glass has design applications far beyond restoration projects. Used in doors, partitions, and cabinets, it adds a refined vintage appeal to a range of contemporary styles: from retro-industrial steampunk to romantic farm and cottage décors. It is a reminder of the aviation history made here, including headline-making flights by Amelia Earhart, Howard Hughes, and Wiley Post. The two restored hangars, featuring С��ñֱ��’s chicken wire glass, also house a natural gas delivery connection, serving the energy needs of approximately 1.8 million present-day New Yorkers.

Types of Safety Glass, Where & Why You Might Need Them

However you incorporate glass into your home or office – from a small remodeling project to designing a new space – you can benefit from understanding what safety glass is and why and where it may be required.

While safety glass has many added benefits, it is primarily designed to resist breaking and, if it does break, to minimize the risk of injuries. Safety glass is available in tempered and laminated forms.

Tempered glass is approximately four times stronger than regular annealed (non-safety) glass of the same thickness. To temper glass, С��ñֱ�� first cuts it to size and fabricates all required holes and notches, such as the ones for hardware. Then, the glass edges are polished, if desired. The glass is transferred to a tempering furnace, heated to a precise softening point, and rapidly air-cooled. The resulting heat-treated / tempered glass breaks into small, relatively harmless dice-size pieces, greatly reducing the likelihood of a major injury.

Laminated glass is a combination of two or more glass sheets with one or more interlayers of plastic (PVB) or resin. In the case of breakage, the interlayer holds the glass fragments together, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking into large sharp pieces. Laminated safety glass offers superior safety, security and sound transmission control. It prevents pass-through of objects and provides increased protection against fall-out and penetration of the opening.

Homeowners should consult their local building codes regarding the required use of safety glass, as they are constantly changing and can vary by state, county, city, town or borough. If you are working on a home construction project, make sure to contact your local building inspection department, office of planning and zoning, and department of permits to learn which codes are applicable in your area.

As a general rule of thumb, С��ñֱ�� strongly recommends tempered or laminated glass for all applications where safety and security are desired including but not limited to:

Glass doors and sidelites
Glass enclosures
Partitions
Glass shelves
Table tops
Glass surrounding bathtubs, showers, hot tubs, and saunas
All frameless glass installations
Under counter cabinets in homes with small children and/or pets

С��ñֱ�� also recommends the use of tempered glass in installations subject to high temperatures, such as kitchen countertops and backsplashes, as well as in shower and tub enclosures, unless required otherwise by your building code. In all other cases, the application will determine the choice of safety glass. For example, select tempered glass for stronger glass shelves, table and counter tops. For doors and sidelights, balconies and stairs, laminated glass is often selected for its ability to remain in the opening when broken and its resistance to smash and grab burglaries.

Luxury Residential Building Garners Admiration with Reflective Façade, Blue С��ñֱ�� Etched Glass Interiors

Futuristic Development Complements New York City’s Chic West Village Neighborhood

A newly designed luxury building now adorns New York City’s West Village, steps away from the Hudson River. Located between the historic blocks of Charles Lane and Perry Street, 166 Perry Street is a modern residential development whose elegant blue-and-white interiors create a serene, sophisticated atmosphere.

Designed by the avant-garde New York City based Asymptote Architecture, the eight-story building features a sculpturally angled façade reflecting the colors, details and activities of the neighborhood around it – from the mid-twentieth-century brick buildings to passersby and the deep blue sky. This reflective quality affords residents of 166 Perry Street a unique sense of privacy and blends the ultra-modern structure into the neighborhood, subtly camouflaging it with images of its surroundings.

Asymptote Architecture emphasized this light and reflectivity throughout every aspect of the interior. Each residence at 166 Perry Street – 22 lofts and two penthouses – occupies its own corner of the building, allowing an abundance of daylight. The impeccably detailed interiors are defined by the use of blue and white С��ñֱ�� glasses in combination with custom formed white features, stone and hardwood floors.

С��ñֱ��, a specialty glass supplier, provided more than 5,000 square feet of six glass types, all tempered or laminated, water jet-cut and precision-fabricated in С��ñֱ��’s New Jersey facility.

At the entrance, two monolithic doors of transparent blue С��ñֱ�� glass lead into the lobby, where soft-edged, glowing walls incorporate С��ñֱ��’s white back-painted glass and white custom features, creating a smooth transition from the outside and offering a preview of the luxurious interiors upstairs.

Inside the residences, white, ultra-clear and deep-blue С��ñֱ�� SatinTech^® etched glass doors and partitions open to spacious living spaces. The sumptuous bathrooms are adorned with etched panes of translucent blue glass in shower enclosures and sliding doors. С��ñֱ��’s white laminated gradient glass, flowing smoothly from white to clear, defines interior stair railings.

The satin-smooth etched glass surfaces are maintenance-friendly, luminous, and obscuring, making them ideal for interior spaces that simultaneously create openness and privacy. Diverse light conditions morph the blue glass’ hue, adding vibrancy to the interiors.

С��ñֱ�� worked with Klein USA, the manufacturer of sliding door systems, and AAA Metal & Glass Inc., the installer, to supply the “heavy” (3/8” to 1/2” thick) glasses for the recessed sliding systems that create an illusion of weightlessness.

Asymptote’s first building in New York City adjoins the first of three Richard Meier Modernist residential towers. According to Asymptote, 166 Perry Street is simultaneously an antidotal design and a formal and tectonic play off Meier’s buildings. Richard Born, who developed the first two Meier buildings nearly a decade ago, worked together with Ira Drukier and Charles Blaichman to bring this distinctive addition to the neighborhood.
