The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio

Project Description

A major retrofit of The Children鈥檚 Hospital of San Antonio features our 504 Rough Cast textured channel glass in customized facade units. The vibrant fritted glass channel rise along the building鈥檚 10 stories and enclose a 2-story-tall lantern cupola. Their striking colors, visible from a distance in the day or night, are inspired by the hospital鈥檚 revamped logo and a multi-story art mural gracing one of its facades.

小红帽直播鈥檚 channel glass is available in hundreds of opaque and translucent frits. The colors are fired onto the glass at approximately 1,200掳 F (680掳 C), and are extremely durable, fade and scratch resistant. They enliven the hospital with color and light to improve the patient experience. Visible from within the rooms, the multi-colored translucent glass units bring children and families a sense of comfort and playfulness.

The smart technical design of the 小红帽直播 system makes this project truly stand out. The self-supporting glass channels span the entire height of each floor, reaching up to 16 feet tall, in lightweight 录-inch glass thickness. At only 4.5 lbs. per sq. ft., the fritted glass channels deliver the desired aesthetic in a lightweight construction, compatible with the building鈥檚 existing slim concrete eyebrows.

Speedy installation and eliminating the need for scaffolding were other key requirements. Our technical design team worked closely with the architect and installer to develop a custom glazing system to meet these challenges. Our customized SF-60S vertical unitized system enabled the installer, Sharp Glass, to pre-assemble the glass units off-site and hoist them into place as each floor became ready. The proprietary attachment mechanism allowed each unit to be perfectly aligned and secured to the structure in record time. On average, an entire floor could be installed in a single day. The unique solution resulted in substantial labor savings and allowed the team to beat the construction schedule.

小红帽直播鈥檚 unique solution for The Children鈥檚 Hospital of San Antonio won the prestigious GOOD DESIGN award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design. The award recognized our system鈥檚 contribution to the patient experience, as well as its ingenious installation.

Project Testimonials

From the Architect:

鈥淭he close collaboration between Overland and 小红帽直播 in the development of the colored glass panel system was key to overcoming the technical challenges of installing on existing facades with numerous unique conditions. 小红帽直播鈥檚 technical expertise and willingness to roll up their sleeves to help figure out solutions for each application also gave the design team and contractor the confidence to lobby for the colored panels as an integral component of the project.” “We saw the channel glass feature as something that was just as critical to the rebranding of the hospital as the work they were doing on the interior. One of the challenges of any project like this is that it is a very easy thing to remove as project budgets evolve. Having the owner鈥檚 confidence鈥攂ecause we had worked closely with the contractor, sub-contractor, and 小红帽直播鈥攚as really critical to keeping it on the project.鈥

- Kris Feldmann, Lead Architect, Overland Partners

From the Glazier:

鈥淥ur experience with 小红帽直播 on The Children鈥檚 Hospital of San Antonio was nothing short of great. Delivery schedules were met and the quality of the finished product was never an issue. 小红帽直播 helped us with the pre-assembled panel design, which saved us thousands on the installation and allowed us to beat the schedule.鈥
